  • "...It's all about the script and the characters not the cinematography. The cinematography and set design should work in concert with the story and characters...the cinematography is there to support the story..." - Don

Biography

Don Michael Brown was born and raised in Southern California and took an interest in cinematography at the early age of 13 after screening the film "Apocalypse Now". "That film," said Don, "changed my life." Don's father, Dennis Michael Brown, supported his son's passion by giving him a used Bolex 16mm camera for his 15th birthday. "With that camera I made my first short film titled "Blood Money" while still a junior in high school," said Don. "I tried directing...once. But I learned quickly that the director didn't get to operate the camera all of the time and I know there are great directors who do...the director has too many other things to worry about and I want to focus on the image making process. That's where it's at for me. " When asked who inspires Don he said, "Who doesn't?!, where do I begin (in no particular order), Vittorio Storaro, Caleb Deschanel, Michael Chapman, Allen Daviau, Roger Deakins, Martin Scorsese, Wally Pfister, Paul Thomas Anderson, Gordon Willis, Bryan England, John Hora, Owen Roizman, Robert Elswit, M. Night Shyamalan and Pierre Chemaly." In one word how would Don describe filmmaking? "Magical." Don continues to live in Southern California with his wife, Giselle, cat and dog.
